There has been an increase in demand for midwifery services across British Columbia, yet midwifery services are still not accessible in some rural communities, like Dawson Creek.
Vision for midwifery in Dawson Creek:
To integrate midwifery services into the health care services that are available to the community
To improve health outcomes and increase consumer satisfaction with the maternity care being offered and available in the community
To increase midwife-assisted births in line with provincial standards which are currently at 21%
My name is Sonje Juul and I am originally from South Africa. Our family moved to Dawson Creek in 2016.
I have been working as a midwife since 2009 and have worked in various settings, including birth centres, hospitals and home births and have cared for an extremely diverse population of women with both low- and high-risk pregnancies.
I taught undergraduate midwifery at university level before we eventually moved to Canada and currently am UBC clinical faculty staff for midwifery students under the department of family medicine.
Life has been very busy in general, but we are blessed to be parents to at least one energetic little boy, Alex.
I am very excited to be pioneering midwifery care in this part of British Columbia and look forward to working with the families of Dawson Creek and the surrounding areas.

My name is Haley Hayner and I am originally from a small town in the Kootenays. I love living in rural places and moved to Dawson Creek in 2018. I pursued a biology degree at the University of Lethbridge before discovering midwifery as a career. I studied midwifery at the University of British Columbia where I had the opportunity to care for families and catch babies in multiple communities across the province, as well as internationally. I have worked in a variety of settings from large hospitals to home births. I am excited to be joining Sonje in offering midwifery care in Dawson Creek and the surrounding area.
